Having passed a driving test many drivers assume there is no need for any other training.
However, as traffic on our roads gets busier and new in vehicle technology is being introduced, perhaps it is worthwhile considering if you would benefit from any further training.
Perhaps you feel uncomfortable driving on smart motorways, in heavy congestion or during rush hour? Perhaps roundabouts and local road layouts have become more complex?
Do you find yourself dreading driving? Do you avoid some routes? Do you only drive at certain times of the day?
Driving provides us with freedom to be able to go where we want and when. It provides us with an opportunity to be independent and to socialise.
Driving is a life long learning experience. There is no such thing as the perfect driver and we all have something new to learn no matter how good a driver we think we are.
When you have a few minutes think about what you enjoy most about driving. Then think about any driving situations which cause you anxiety and ask yourself why. If you have identified any driving situation which causes you anxiety what are you going to do about it?
Perhaps you could:
· Read the latest Highway Code which is available on line at https://www.gov.uk/browse/driving/highway-code-road-safety
This is not just for learner drivers but contains a lot of useful information for all road users. For example, information about how to safely use smart motorways.
· Visit trusted websites where you know the information you are getting is accurate. For example, Brake the road safety charity, RoSPA, Think!, AA, RAC etc. These websites contain a lot of varied information about road safety, including driving, and may be able to provide you with the information and support you need.
· If you are interested in driving research local driving groups such as those affiliated to RoSPA or the Institute of Advanced Motorists. These groups offer mentoring and coaching for drivers who want to improve. You do not have to take an advanced driving test if you do not want to.
· Consider advanced driver training courses or refreshers.
Life long learning for drivers is important. There is support out there for you if you want it. You are not alone. Do not let driving anxiety or lack of confidence stop you from driving. Do something about it now.
