All Weather Driving

What can you do to help you stay safe as we go into winter?

Be Seen

·         Make sure all your vehicle lights are working

·         Use dipped beam to help others see you in poor visibility such as rain, mist, fog or snow

·         Check your wipers and replace them if they are worn or damaged

·         Keep your windscreen washer fluid topped up

·         Clear windows of ice or snow and demist before moving off

·         Keep a demisting cloth to hand for the inside windows

Journey Preparation

·         Is your vehicle road worthy and in good order?

·         When was the last time you checked your tyres, oil and coolant?

·         Have you got enough fuel for your journey?

·         What if you get stuck? Have you got warm clothes, water, a snow shovel?

·         Have you told anyone where you are going and when you expect to get there?

Journey Planning

·         In bad weather do you really need to travel. Can you work from home, cancel non urgent commitments or reschedule?

·         Plan your route. Main roads are more likely to have been gritted than side roads. Consider what time you travel. For example, rush hour, day light hours or darkness

·         Take a fully charged mobile phone with you in case you need help which you can keep turned off in the glove box to avoid distractions

·         Listen to local radio and weather forecasts and take heed of bad weather warnings
