The Highway Code Rule 126

"Always drive at a speed that will allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear.

You should leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front so that you can pull up safely if it suddenly slows down or stops." (The Highway Code)

The further back you are the more you can see in front of, underneath and around other road users in front of you.

The further back you are the more of a proactive driver you become. For example, you no longer find yourself having to react to vehicles in front unexpectedly braking. Because you are so far back you create the time and space you need to see what is happening well ahead, you are also able to anticipate what is likely to happen and to manage any risks you have identified by altering your position and speed.

Proactive driving is good!
