In 2019, there were 1,748 reported road fatalities, 2% less than in 2018 (1,784). Source: Reported road casualties in Great Britain: provisional results 2019
There were 25,975 seriously injured casualties in road traffic accidents reported to the police in 2019
There were 153,315 casualties of all severities in reported road traffic accidents in 2019. This is 5% lower than in 2018 and is the lowest level since 1979.
Accounting for change in traffic, the rate of fatalities per billion vehicle miles has fallen by 2% from 5.38 in 2018 to 5.25 fatalities per billion vehicle miles in 2019.
Even though the provisional figures show a decrease in fatalities the number masks the fact there has been very little reduction over the last decade in the number of road casualties. Whilst any reduction of casualties is positive, such small reductions hide the fact that what we are doing to reduce the number of road users killed or injured on our roads each year is not working. One death or injury is one person killed or injured too many.
What can we do to help to reduce road causalities?
Graduated driving licenses for young and inexperienced drivers?
If the number of at work drivers involved in fatal road traffic collisions is up to 25% depending upon which source you use, then effective driver management for at work drivers, including training, is an investment worth making.
