Advanced Driving

1. Learn and internalise the Mirrors, Position and Speed routine.

Mirrors = observation, looking, scanning. Look as far ahead as you can and all around. Know what is around you at all times. As you are driving moving your ahead around and checking mirrors to make sure you see other road users. Make sure you look around before moving off from standing such as at traffic lights.

Position = use the space you have to move away from danger. Glide into safe space. Alter your position to create time and space. Simple things like leave a door's opening when passing parked cars. In meeting situations move away from oncoming cars by tucking in.

Speed = come off the gas to start to slow earlier because you can either speed up again or gently start to brake. Slowing earlier to assess and decide what to do is defensive driving. Slowing by a few miles per hour creates more time to look, assess and decide.

2. "If you see something you must do something." Start by 'reacting' earlier to risks you see. For example, if you see brake lights ahead then as soon as you see them check the rear view mirror and come off the gas to start to slow, Then you have more time to reassess.

3. Smooth. Make everything as smooth as you can. Do not just brake. When you use the footbrake feel and think about what the car is doing. Is the car slowing but you cannot feel the footbrake because you are so smooth. Or is the brake snatching because you braked too late. When steering or accelerating again feel how you are using the controls and how your actions impact upon the control and smoothness of the car.
